I use both the Vapor line (it's not really a overflow line) and a vented cap in Fl just to be sure because it does get so hot here. NO Ca bikes are NOT the only ones to use that vent line from I think 91 up they use it and it is a hard plastic line to a vapor valve that attachs and even plugs into the main frame tube between the Battery and the oil tank. If they come loose and get injested you will have MUCH bigger problems. You did buy a shop manual and parts book right? Be sure to use blue locktite on the carb to cleaner bolts. Be sure to set your float height per the shop manual. ![]() It sounds like the float bowl is not being kept filled correctly. Also take the filter screen out of the tank and make sure it is clean. OK I just re-read your original post and you did say you had a new vented cap sorry about that.I would look at the float bowl/needle and seat next. In any case, should I take the tank off and drill a hole into the end of the vent pipe? It'll start right up again 90% of the time, the other ten it won't start again until it kinda backfires or poofs, then it starts. She just stalls out sometimes, while idling or while driving. I just replaced the fuel cap with a new vented cap, but I had to order a 90's FXR cap as the stock one would not fit. The tip was painted over so I scraped it off with a razor and the end of the pipe is solid. The tank has an air vent running from the top to the bottom, but it's not open at the bottom end. I figured she needed some work when I bought it i hadn't figured on the seller lying about everything else. I just bought my sporty two weeks ago, and have been having some issues with it stalling occasionally. Be sure you get the correct part number for the year bike you have.BTW what year is it? This went to a carbon canister on the CA only bikes. Most HD dealers do not even realise the difference between the caps. Your tank looks just like mine with the nipple on the bpottom capped off. Could cause a stall or just a hickup till the fuel supply again reached the needle and seat. If the vacuum becomes enough to overcome the head in the fuel line it will burp back through the fuel line and would then allow fuel to flow again, running or not. If someone installed a non vented cap on a non vented tank you would definitely have a problem with a vacuum on your tank after running. ![]() The tube is connected to a hose that just hangs under the frame/engine. It will leak from the tube under the tank if I over fill it. I have the same below my cap but I don't think my cap is vented since it doesn't leak with the bike laying on its side. I wish I had an old beat up cap I could cut up and see what is inside. Is that the only tube exiting the tank other than fuel supply to carb? The lock itself, where you put the key, and the hole where that cover pivot pin is are the only openings on the outside of the cap. But if you drill a hole from the inside, in that groove between the gasket and the edge of the cap, and stop drilling when you break through the back side, how does the air get in? The key slot itself does not have an automatic cover like I thought, but there is that really big pivoting cover you have to move to get the key in the lock and move back to cover the lock. ![]() I'm pretty sure the cap is not solid metal, it's not heavy enough to be. There appears to be a hollow space between the inner part of the cap and the outer part. There is about a 1/8" groove between the edge of the gasket and the edge of the cap. The rubber gasket is very hard and not flexible. I have my 2016 Rebel gas cap in my hands right now. ![]() OK, first I did not mean to offend anyone, but from pictures in several threads here, people have drilled holes in many different places where the shouldn't have.
